Even if you brush and floss regularly, your teeth may become discolored or darkened by a variety of factors. Frequently enjoying foods and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, soda, and berries can cause discoloration. In addition, smoking, age, genetics, and environmental factors all play a role in the accumulation of stains.
Fortunately, the practice of Charles Grannum, DMD offers tooth whitening at our Brooklyn, NY, office, providing patients with the opportunity to enjoy noticeably brighter teeth in just one treatment. Teeth Whitening Options
We understand that everyone’s lifestyle and budget is different, which is why we offer both in-office and at-home whitening options. Before your whitening treatment, you will need a routine cleaning to remove plaque and other debris that might inhibit the effects of your teeth whitening treatment. During in-office bleaching, a hydrogen-peroxide whitening solution will be applied to your teeth. Because this gel contains hydrogen-peroxide, Dr. Grannum will carefully isolate your teeth to prevent any discomfort to your gums. A special LED light will be used to activate the gel, allowing it to actually break down the molecular structure of the stains. After just one brief, one-hour treatment, your teeth will be noticeably whiter, often by up to eight shades.
Take-home whitening treatments work using a similar gel-based solution. After a thorough cleaning, Dr. Grannum will provide you with custom-fitted whitening trays, which will fit snugly over your teeth, and be filled with a whitening gel. This gel contains a much lower percentage of hydrogen-peroxide, guarding against sensitivity and protecting your gums. You will be instructed to wear these trays for several hours every day or overnight, depending on your preferences. Typically, whitening treatment is completed over a two to three week period, and the results are comparable to in-office bleaching.
Which Method is Right For Me?
The type of whitening you choose to undergo is largely dependent on your lifestyle, budget, and time constraints. In-office treatments have immediate results, but may not be the best choice for someone whose teeth are prone to sensitivity. At-home whitening is a more affordable service, so it is often the treatment of choice for those on a budget. It is also preferred by many of our patients who would like to whiten their teeth in the privacy of their own home, as their schedule allows. You can learn more about the benefits of each whitening option during a visit to our office.
