At the practice of Dr. Charles Grannum, we offer custom-made, lifelike dental crowns to our Brooklyn, NY, patients. Dental Crowns: A Closer Look

Dental crowns, also known as "caps," are tooth-shaped restorations that fully cover a tooth down to the gum line. Each crown is customized to match the size, color, and shape of your natural tooth, so that they blend seamlessly with your smile.

During a consultation, Board Certified Prosthodontist Dr. Grannum will examine your teeth and discuss your candidacy for a dental crown with you. Depending on your needs he may recommend an alternative restorative solution, like an inlay or onlay.

To place a crown, Dr. Grannum will numb the treatment area before gently treating the damaged tooth, and altering its shape to make room for the crown. Once the tooth has been prepared, he will create an impression to send to an offsite dental laboratory where the crown will be created. During this time, you will be fitted with a temporary crown.

In about two weeks, you will return to our office to have the permanent crown placed. Dr. Grannum will first check to make sure it fits comfortably and achieves proper balance in your bite. After making any necessary adjustments, he will bond the crown using a specialized dental cement. Once the permanent crown is in place, it will look and feel extremely natural. Crowns can be cared for just like your natural teeth, and with proper oral hygiene, can last for years.

Common Uses

Thanks to advanced techniques, today’s dental crowns look more lifelike and are more comfortable then ever before. Dental crowns serve a variety of both cosmetic and restorative purposes including:

  • Covering large fillings and supporting teeth that have compromised structure
  • Protecting a tooth that has been treated for decay
  • Strengthening a cracked tooth
  • Anchoring a dental bridge
  • Concealing stained, chipped, or uneven teeth
  • Topping a dental implant

In the past, crowns were made of metal or porcelain fused to metal, which could become gray after years of wear. Our practice prefers all-porcelain Empress® crowns for their durability and aesthetically pleasing appearance. We strive to provide patients with durability, restored functionality, and a beautiful appearance with every dental crown treatment.
