Frenectomy

Frenectomy is a minor oral surgical procedure involving the removal or modification of afrenum a small fold of tissue that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the underlying alveolar mucosa or gingiva.

Clinical Objectives Include:

  1. Correction of functional limitations: Improving tongue mobility (lingual frenum) or reducing tension on the gingiva/lips (labial frenum) that may interfere with speech, oral hygiene, or orthodontic treatment.
  2. Prevention of periodontal issues: Eliminating frenum attachments that contribute to gingival recession, diastema formation, or tissue irritation.
  3. Facilitation of prosthetic or orthodontic therapy: Allowing proper placement of dental appliances or restorations.

Procedure Overview

  • Administration of local anesthesia.
  • Surgical excision or modification of the frenum using scalpel, laser, or electrosurgery.
  • Suturing or allowing natural healing depending on technique.
  • Postoperative care to ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort.

Objective
To restore optimal oral function, prevent associated dental or periodontal complications, and enhance oral health outcomes.
