Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical periodontal therapy aimed at treating and managing periodontal disease by thoroughly removing plaque, calculus, and bacterial toxins from the tooth surfaces and root structures.

Procedure Overview

  • Scaling: Mechanical removal of plaque and calculus from both supragingival (above the gumline) and subgingival (below the gumline) tooth surfaces.
  • Root planing: Smoothing and shaping of the root surfaces to eliminate bacterial endotoxins and promote reattachment of the periodontal tissues.
  • Adjunctive care: May include antimicrobial therapy or local delivery of medications to enhance periodontal healing.

Objective
To reduce periodontal inflammation, eliminate pathogenic biofilm, halt disease progression, and promote regeneration and stabilization of the supporting periodontal structures. This procedure is often indicated for patients with periodontitis presenting with pocket formation, gingival inflammation, and attachment loss.
