Endodontic Retreatment

Endodontic retreatment is a dental procedure performed when a tooth that has previously undergone root canal therapy exhibits persistent or recurrent pathology, such as infection, inflammation, or discomfort.

Procedure Overview

  • The existing coronal restoration is removed to gain access to the pulp chamber.
  • The previous root canal filling material is carefully removed.
  • The canal system is thoroughly cleaned, shaped, and disinfected to eliminate microbial contaminants.
  • The canals are refilled and hermetically sealed with a biocompatible material.
  • A new coronal restoration is sometimes placed by your dentist to restore function and prevent reinfection.

Purpose
Retreatment is indicated when the initial endodontic therapy has failed due to factors such as missed canals, inadequate debridement, complex canal anatomy, or coronal leakage, providing the tooth with an additional opportunity for preservation.
